Otho’s Story:
One day Otho sat behind a log and watched a human child playing in the woods. The child paused for a moment as if he sensed Otho’s presence. Otho closed his eyes and cowered further behind the log, thinking that the child might try to capture him. Because he was orphaned at a very young age, he was never taught the fine arts of hiding and escaping humans. When Otho opened his eyes, the child was gone. But the boy had left behind a leather object and some fabric. Otho very cautiously approached the items. What Otho found was a leather shoe and a beautiful piece of green velveteen fabric torn from the boy’s coat. Otho smiled and whispered a “thank you” for the gifts. There was a gentle rustle of leaves which told Otho the boy had heard his gratitude.
Otho lives a very simple but content life. The soft velveteen fabric now fills that leather shoe and is the perfect place for a young orphan to lay his head at night. The shoe lace has done an excellent job as a belt.
Otho often sits on the shoe and contemplates life in the woods. His memories of his parents are dim but happy ones. His patrimony is German. But Otho’s red hair is from his mother’s Irish heritage. He dreams that they were noble elves as he reaches up and touches the purple silk scarf around his neck. That scarf once belonged to his father. Attached to the scarf is one pearl that used to adorn his mother’s neck. Below the pearl is her set of ruby red earrings. He can still see her smile at him. Then he gently pulls his worn leather rabbit close to him and listens for that gentle rustle of leaves again.
